Indirect Israel-Syrian talks resume next Sunday on borders www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=5556Israel has not verified the announcement, which DEBKAfile’s sources report the presidential palace in Paris put out to lend weight to Nicolas Sarkozy’s state visit to Damascus starting Wed. Sept 3 and boost his pretensions to a role in Middle East peacemaking. The last round of talks in Ankara took place in July. The issue of future Israel-Syrian borders in a peace accord and the disposition of the Golan, which Israel captured after the Syrian invasion in 1967, are still up in the air. Furthermore, the Bush administration has asked Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert not to push ahead any further with the indirect track. In any case, the statement should rightly come from Jerusalem.
