There were no immediate reports of injury and damage and a tsunami alert was not issued. The epicenter of the quake was 60 miles south-southeast of the Tongan capital of Nuku'alofa and 6.2 miles deep. The quake struck at 3:34 p.m. local time. A stronger earthquake that struck the Pacific island country in September generated a tsunami that killed nine people in the northern Tongan island of Niuatoputapu.
