This is the third consecutive year of drought in the region, which is the poorest part of the country. The consequence has been widespread food insecurity. About 65,000 families left the region between early 2009 and August 2009, and those who have remained face chronic food shortages, according to a United Nation's report. In addition, up to 1.3 million people have been affected by the drought, with 800,000 people severely affected, according to U.N. and government figures. The drought is expected to break this year, but people affected by the drought will reportedly need food assistance until the drought has broken and new crops have matured
