Early morning today, the archipelago of Indonesia was struck with a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. There has been a tsunami alert raised but later in the day it was lifted out. The epicenter of the quake was spotted 204km (127 miles) northwest of Sibolga on Sumatra’s coast, at a depth of nearly 48km according to USGS.
There has been six people on Simeulue island were injured when the quake hit, and two houses collapsed under the violent shaking. The island is just off the coast of Banda Aceh, a city at the northern tip of Indonesia’s Sumatra island where residents lost power after the shake.
The archipelago was situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire wherein volcanic eruptions are so likely. Local television reported that people rushed to higher ground in some areas. Six years ago, a 9.1 magnitude quake off the coast of Aceh triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed quarter of a million people in 13 countries including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
