On Aug. 24th, 1992, round six on the bilateral peace talks resumed in Wash. D.C., until Sept. 3rd. On Aug. 24th, Prime minister Rabin canceled eleven deportation orders against PLO activists, Israel presented a detailed autonomy plan, defining the role of the Palestinian Administration Council controlling civilian matters. That same day, Hurricane Andrew--a phenominal cat. 5 storm with top winds recorded at 177 m.p.h.--smashed into southern Florida and became the worst natural disaster to ever hit America. 180,000 people were left homeless in Fla., 25,000 in Louisiana. Damage estimate were as high as 35 billion dollars. The N.Y. Times & USA Today reported all this on their front pages along with the headline they loved the most, that President Bush's rating collapsed in the polls, falling behind Bill Clinton in the presidential race. Bush previously enjoyed a 92% rating a year before during the Gulf war. The timing is breathtaking.
