BEIJING (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey says that a magnitude 6.6 earthquake has hit Tibet, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The USGS said on its Web site that the quake struck at 4:30 p.m. (0830 GMT) Monday about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of the Tibetan capital of Lhasa and more than 1,600 miles (2,600 kilometers) away from Beijing.
The sparsely populated region has seen several moderate earthquakes in recent weeks.
On May 12, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan province, just east of Tibet, killed almost 70,000 people and left 5 million homeless.
