The quake struck at about 12:53 a.m. (2020 GMT), about 266 km (166 miles) northeast of the capital, Kabul, the USGS reported. No deaths or damages were reported from the quake, the governor of Badakhshan province told CNN. The USGS characterized the temblor as a "strong" quake.
