Two relatively minor earthquakes within the past 24 hours have rattled the southeast area of the Big Island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first of the quakes, at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, was assigned a preliminary magnitude of 2.9. It was centered seven miles almost due south of Volcano, Hawaii, at a depth of 5.8 miles, the USGS reported.
The second quake was registered at 3:48 a.m. today. It was assigned a preliminary magnitude of 2.6 and was centered about four miles southwest of Volcano at a depth of 1.1 miles.
There were no reports of injuries or damage from either of the temblors.
