Quake strikes northern Japan: USGS 10 hours ago
TOKYO (AFP) — A 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook northern Japan on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 23:33 pm (14:33 GMT), was 230 kilometres (143 miles) southeast of the city of Sapporo on the northern island of Hokkaido, the USGS reported.
The quake struck at a depth of 39 kilometres.
Around 20 percent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan.
