NOTE: Due to the current situation I'm resending this old Email out again. While there is not that much one can do for viral verses bacterial infections, these products have been shown to help and are readily available. The most important against flu in this list that has been shown the last few years is the Elderberry extract, but the others are effective. Take at the very first signs of becoming ill. It will probally be a couple/three days before we get a picture from the media of just how severe this really is. In the interm, be in prayer and intercession!
NOTE: For those of you living in Colorado, if you have access to a Vitamin Cottage, or online -( WEB-SITE: www.vitamincottage.com/ ) - As many of you already know: You can get all the products listed in this Email at a lower price and in more variety of choices then are shown below.
BTW...I didn't sent it out earlier, but!!! Here is an article of a large picture of BHO pictured as messiah that they are hanging up in New York City on April 29th for his 100th day in office!!! - www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=96138 - sickening!
Yet as things wax worse and worse, look up, for your Redemption draweth nigh!
Shalom in Yeshua Messiah alone.

EFFECTIVE ANTI-FLU SUBSTANCES
(PREP AGAINST BIRD-FLU - BUT DON'T TAKE THE SHOT!)
PLEASE FORWARD...
NOTE: I've put info from several sources on this subject in the one Email - hopefully this will make it convienent and timely since Bird-Flu has been suggested by the C.D.C. and W.H.O. as perhaps going into a human transmission stage shortly. Even if you're one of those who think the whole thing is just a conspiracy to control people, or one that thinks it was a release of bio-warfare-agent either intentional or accidental from China or somewhere else, or whatever you happen to think - to me it still makes good sense to prepare now. And if nothing happens - then at least you'll have some effective natural remedies on hand when you or your loved ones come down with a "normal" flu.
NOTE: THIS FIRST PRODUCT (SAMBUCOL - Another similar product is Sambucos ) APPEARS TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE, ALTHOUGH I'D RECOMMEND HAVING THEM ALL ON HAND in the case of a severe viral or flu (and also a bacterial) outbreak of any kind for yourself and your family - if you simply can't afford to have them all on hand - I'd seriously suggest at the very least having as a minimum: at least one bottle of "Sambucol" (below) and also a large bottle of vitamin C on hand; and then a bottle too if you can afford it of Elderberry capsules. Hopefully those two or three products alone would be effective enough to fight off any severe viral infection.

ISRAEL 21C - Study shows Israeli elderberry extract (Sambucol) effective against avian flu
By Nicky Blackburn January 29, 2006 -
The elder has often been called the 'medicine chest" of the country people.
At first glance, world-renowned Israeli virologist Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu does not seem like the sort of person you expect to come up with what could turn out to be a cure for one of humanity's biggest threats today - the avian flu.
She seems comfortable and grandmotherly, not the type you usually associate with the frontline of research into a potential pandemic. On the other hand, however, Mumcuoglu is clearly a very determined woman who has turned a lifetime of research into the health benefits of elderberry, an old folk remedy for influenza, into a clinically proven treatment for regular flu. Now, new in-vitro tests have proved that her remedy, the elderberry-based Sambucol, also appears to be effective against avian flu.
Last week, Retroscreen Virology, a leading British medical research institute associated to Queen Mary College, University of London, announced that Sambucol was at least 99% effective against the avian flu virus, H5N1, and in cell cultures significantly neutralized the infectivity of the virus.
"I think that Sambucol has a great role to play - it really can save lives," Mumcuoglu told ISRAEL21c. "To my knowledge, it's the only product that can cut the flu in half, before complications have a chance of setting in. If we do have a cure for chicken flu, this is a really positive thing for Israel."
Mumcuoglu (pronounced mum-shu-glu) was born in Algeria and immigrated to Israel in 1974. She holds a Doctorate in Virology, and studied bird flu during her Ph.D. In the 1980s, Mumcuoglu began studying the natural healing elements of the elderberry from the black elder tree (Sambucus nigra). Her interest in the plant was piqued because it had been used in medicine for many centuries. It was first referred to as a healer in the 5th century BC and received mentions in the writings of Hippocrates, Dioscurides and Plinius.
Elderberry wine was traditionally used for influenza and the ill effects of the chills, and the juice of the black elderberry has historically been an invaluable remedy. The elder has often been called the 'medicine chest" of the country people.
During Mumcuoglu's research she discovered the key active ingredient in elderberry and when she tested it against the flu virus, she found it effective. On her arrival in Israel, Mumcuoglu joined the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, and continued her research.
The result was Sambucol, a patented natural formula which contains a potent antiviral compound, AntiVirin, isolated from the black elderberry, and three flavonoids - naturally occurring plant antioxidants. In 1992, Mumcuoglu decided to commercialize her elderberry supplement, and founded Razei Bar Industries to do so.
Mumcuoglu, who is president of Razei Bar, first tested her research on patients in the Southern Israel flu epidemic of 1992/3. The results were extremely encouraging. Within 24 hours, 20% of those patients taking Sambucol had dramatic improvements in symptoms like fever, muscle aches and pains and coughing. By the second day, 73% were improved and by day three, 90%. In the untreated group, only 16% felt better after two days. The majority of that group took almost a week to begin feeling better.
In 1995, laboratory studies were carried out at Hadassah, which showed that Sambucol was effective against human, swine and avian influenza strains.
Shortly afterwards, a further randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in Norway, where Sambucol was shown to significantly reduce the duration of flu by approximately four days. The use of rescue medication (pain relievers, etc.) was significantly less in the group receiving Sambucol than in the placebo group. The study concluded that Sambucol stimulates the healthy immune system by increasing production of inflammatory cytokines.
Today Razei Bar sells a number of different liquid anti-viral treatments including Sambucol Black Elderberry Extract, Sambucol Black Elderberry Syrup, Sambucol Immune System, and Sambucol for Kids. The company also has a number of elderberry flu remedies designed for diabetics.
At the end of last year, Retroscreen Virology in London began laboratory tests on Sambucol to discover whether the natural remedy could also be used to combat the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu in dog kidney cells. And their findings last week are an encouraging sign.
While it is too soon to know if Sambucol can cure avian flu in humans, the Retroscreen Virology trial does hold out hope that it may be a possible solution if more studies support the findings. Mumcuoglu admits that clinical research into H5N1 is impossible at this stage, because there have only been 140 or so cases around the world, and the mortality rate is over 50%. Instead, the company is preparing to begin in vivo studies to look at the effect of Sambucol against the disease caused by the avian influenza virus.
If Sambucol does prove effective against H5N1, it will be a major breakthrough. Unlike many of the other remedies being touted as possible treatments to bird flu, this is a tried and tested product, already on sale in 17 countries around the world, including the US, Canada, Britain, Holland, Belgium, Norway, Israel, South Korea, and Singapore.
In the US, Sambucol has been well received and now controls about 80% of the elderberry remedy market. The liquid food supplement is distributed by Nature's Way Products and sold in most health food stores across the country.
A SPINS survey revealed that in the US three of Sambucol's products are among the top 10 out of 662 herbal formulas available for adults, while the children's remedy, Sambucol for Kids, is at the top of the list as the number one formula for kids out of 192 products in different categories.
Another advantage of Sambucol, says Mumcuoglu is that unlike the anti-viral drug Tamiflu, which is the only treatment for bird flu now available that is thought to reduce the length and severity of flu symptoms, Sambucol has no side effects. It can also be given safely to children. Tamiflu, in contrast, cannot be given to children under 12.
Recently there has also been doubt cast on the effectiveness of Tamiflu as two Vietnamese patients, including a 13-year-old girl, developed resistance to the anti-viral drug and died. A report on this was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Commenting on the report in the journal, Prof. Anne Moscona of Cornell University in New York said Tamiflu-resistant H5N1 "is now a reality".
"This frightening report should inspire us to device pandemic strategies that do not favor the development of Tamiflu-resistant strains."
The US, like many nations around the world, has stockpiled supplies of Tamiflu.
Another advantage of Sambucol is that it can treat every type of flu virus.
"Our research has shown that the antiviral effect of Sambucol is not strain-specific," says Mumcuoglu. "It was effective against all influenza viruses tested. The original formulation of Sambucol is the product we have tested in all cases - both in the laboratory and in clinical studies for the common flu. It is what was also used in the recent experiments in London against avian influenza virus thus any Sambucol already on the shelves is the same as any we would produce now."
Traditional vaccines given to prevent flu from developing are often created through guesswork, with scientists simply speculating which strain of flu is likely to hit that year. The three most likely strains are combined into a vaccine, but by the time the flu season arrives, these strains may have undergone changes, or new strains may have emerged. Despite this, Mamcuoglu insists that those at risk continue to take their flu jabs.
Mamcuoglu insists that use of Sambucol against traditional flu viruses will help reduce the annual death rate. "If you stop the flu virus at the beginning then you stop it going to the lungs, or from creating the additional complications that are normally the cause of death," she explains.
Currently about 30,000 people die of regular flu every year in the US, a figure that could rise alarmingly if avian flu becomes the pandemic experts are predicting. If Sambucol proves effective against bird flu, however, Mamcuoglu believes that figure will be much lower.
The next round of trials into Sambucol's efficacy as a treatment for bird flu are likely to be completed during the year. Mumcuoglu is ready for any upsurge in sales that are likely if the results are positive. "We have additional production facilities on standby," she says.
The company also has another interesting product in the pipeline, called ArteryCare 40 Plus. This is an antioxidant formula containing strong antioxidants from the elderberry, the pomegranate and the persimmon. It helps avoid the formation of plaque in the arteries by preventing the oxidation of LDL (the bad cholesterol), and is thought to also have anti-aging properties.

Bird Flu, Indian Reverse Engineers and Mangosteens, Oh My! -
I sometimes hang out at Brad DeLong’s blog, where apparently Razib thought I was a dude. Yesterday DeLong wrote a post about Tamiflu, the Roche patented drug which is the one of the only plausible defenses against the dreaded Avian influenza or Asian Bird Flu. DeLong was mostly concerned with the domestic policy and economic ramifications of nationalizing a patent in times of emergency and stockpiling a drug ahead of time, but as with Sepia Mutiny, the comments can be most educational—and that’s how I found out that clever Cipla is at its Robin Hood reverse engineering tricks again. Bird flu is, of course, a global issue:
Cipla, an Indian producer of generic drugs, is preparing to become an alternative producer of oseltamivir phosphate, an antiviral drug better known by the brand name Tamiflu.Cipla plans to offer Tamiflu in the Indian market and in 49 less-developed countries where the company already sells AIDS treatments, Hamied says. The legality of the introduction in India, where pharmaceutical patents started to be recognized this year, is uncertain.
Hamied says he will withdraw Tamiflu from the Indian market if Roche’s patent is recognized. (Link.)
A Roche spokesman, Terry Hurley, said that the company ”fully intends to remain the sole manufacturer of Tamiflu.” . .Making the drug involves 10 complex steps, he said, and the company believes that it’ll take another company ”two to three years, starting from scratch,” to produce it. Hamied dismissed that claim, saying that he initially thought it would be too hard but that his scientists had finished reverse-engineering the drug in his laboratories two weeks ago. He said he could have small commercial quantities available as early as January 2006. Asked if he thought Hamied was making an idle boast, Hurley declined to comment. Hamied said he would sell generic Tamiflu ”at a humanitarian price” in developing nations and not aim at the US or European market. ”God forbid the avian flu should strike India,” he said. ”There is no line of defense.” (Link.)
What does this have to do with mangosteens? I’m glad you asked!
DeLong commenter DuckedApe pointed out an Independent article (original link, readable copy) about how Tamiflu has a key raw ingredient that is primarily available in large quantities from a species of Chinese star anise:
But the herb has a vital function as the source of shikimic acid from which the drug Tamiflu is made, the only defence the world currently has against the threatened flu pandemic… .Yesterday it emerged that a shortage of star anise is one of the key reasons why countries including Britain cannot obtain enough Tamiflu to protect their populations. The herb from which Tamiflu is made is grown in four provinces in China and “huge quantities” of its seeds are needed, according to the Swiss pharmaceutical manufacturer Roche. It is harvested by local farmers between March and May, purified and the shikimic acid extracted at the start of a 10-stage manufacturing process which takes a year. Only star anise grown in the four provinces of China is suitable for manufacture into Tamiflu and 90 per cent of the harvest is already used by Roche. (Link.)
Hamied is aware of the problem: .
But Cipla has neither produced the drug in large quantities nor is able to predict whether its price will be much lower than Roche’s “You must understand one thing: Our synthesis starts from shikimic acid, and it’s not native to India, so we must get it from outside,” Cipla Chairman and Managing Director Yusuf K. Hamied says. (Link.)
Once you have the shikimic acid, the process to make Tamiflu is extremely complex and even involves an explosive step similar to one in AZT manufacturing. It seems that what Cipla has reverse engineered is this post shikimic acid process. Roche has developed a “fermentation route” to manufacturing the shikimic acid, and it seems that Cipla has not yet reverse engineered that. It makes sense that harvesting the raw material might be cheaper than synthesizing or even growing it in vats of E. Coli.* So I got to wondering—what other plants even contain shikimic acid? (I’m, uh, taking Roche’s word for it that “only” the star anise which Roche happens to have a lock on could possibly be useful.)
Eye-straining KosmicJourney.com listed it in the leaves of our familiar rice plant, but I’m a sucker for .gov databases and when I found Dr. Duke’s Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Database at ARS-GRIN.gov** I was thrilled to see what plants came up for Shikimik Acid. It seems that small amounts are available from prickly pears, the leaves of the mastic tree, and India’s own haritaki fruit. The motherlode of a possible 700,000 ppm, however, comes from the leaves of one Mammea americana:
Botanically, it is identified as Mammea americana L., of the family Guttiferae, and therefore related to the mangosteen, q.v. Among alternative names in English are mammee, mammee apple, St. Domingo apricot and South American apricot… .The ripe flesh is appetizingly fragrant and, in the best varieties, pleasantly subacid, resembling the apricot or red raspberry in flavor.. . The mamey is native to the West Indies and northern South America. . It has been nurtured as a specimen in English greenhouses since 1735. It grows well in Bermuda and is quite commonly cultivated in the Bahama Islands and the Greater and Lesser Antilles. (Link.)
In other words, it’s the mangosteen’s long lost Latin American cousin! Mangosteen was previously noted by Abhi as the South Asian Queen of Fruits, and fellow guest-blogger ADS had previously directed my attention to the Fighting Mangosteens! At some point we wondered idly if the tough looking fruit was drinking a glass of its own brethren. I hope it’s not a glass of its Carribean cousins. I am rather charmed by a vision of this tough desi fruit affectionately greeting its relation at the airport, albeit with an Italian accent: Mammea Americana!

Anti-viral advice - boosting the immune system:
Considering its overall safety, there appears to be no good reason why anyone with a chronic or acute health problem should not try, at the very least, a couple of week's regime of two or three 1,000mg tablets of Vitamin C a day.
Need to Know: So how much should you take?
* For a cold
Three 1,000mg doses a day, according to the campaign group Consumers for Health Choice.
* For flu
Although it's more serious, the viral load is similar, according to research, and taking up to 20,000mg a day could be beneficial.
* For shingles
Research has shown that this painful post-viral condition can be pretty well cured by an injection of 3,000mg of vitamin C. Taking four 1,000mg tablets orally for three days could be worthwhile as well.
* For a hangover
Taking 1,000mg daily in the week before a booze-up reduces stress on the liver. If you're drunk and want to look sober, a large dose of vitamin C will prevent drunken behaviour, according to a 1986 study, "Alcohol and Alcoholism".
* To maintain your health
A 1,000mg daily dose is regarded as safe by the Food Standards Agency, and adequate to keep sufficient vitamin C in the plasma and tissues. "We believe this is absolutely safe and definitely beneficial to people's health," says Sue Croft of Consumers for Health Choice.
Natural Remedies For Influenza, In States of Active Infection

Vitamin C May Be A Life-Saver
Mega-doses Can Counter Avian Flu, Hepatitis &
Herpes, And Control Advance Of AIDS
By Jane Feinmann The Independent - UK 4-14-5
...research showing that high doses of Vitamin C can combat bacteria, toxins and severe viral infections including avian flu, SARS, hepatitis and herpes. And this is not a case of doctors sniffing at anecdotal evidence from a handful of enthusiasts. "Vitamin C is possibly the best-researched substance in the world. There are more than 24,000 papers and articles on the authoritative clinical website, Medline.... Levy claims that while recommended daily allowances of 60mg are enough to prevent the development of scurvy in otherwise healthy people, much higher levels are required to maintain health when an infection strikes. At such times, the body begins to "metabolise unusually large amounts of vitamin C, keeping stores so depleted that the recommended daily allowance will not even prevent many of the symptoms of scurvy from developing".
Levy claims that the reason why most animals stay healthy throughout their lives, while humans spend years coping with one or more chronic diseases, is that animals make their own Vitamin C. The wild goat, for instance, makes around 13,000mg a day, rising to 100,000mg when faced with life-threatening infectious or toxic stress, according to a 1961 study published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.
So, is Levy right? Should everyone be taking mega-doses every day and having intravenous infusions when they fall ill? Possibly.
Dr Rodney Adeniyi-Jones regularly gives 20,000mg doses to people with arterial disease and as part of a flu treatment protocol, describing its effects as "beneficial... but not miraculous". And Professor George Lewith of the Centre for Complementary and Integrated Medicine says that while Vitamin C is not a panacea, it does have clinical benefits depending on the dosage....
Levy may well be seen to have an axe to grind, yet the evidence seems to support his view that apart from causing diarrhoea, mega-doses of Vitamin C are not toxic. He says that a series of studies published in leading journals have shown that, far from causing cancer, Vitamin C is a safe supplement for chronic cancer patients. Further large studies suggest that supplements do not put a normal person at greater risk of developing kidney stones. According to Levy, the problem is not that people might take too much, but that they won't take enough - and thus won't get the desired effects. "There's a popular medical view that taking Vitamin C just makes expensive urine. Some of it is lost in urine, but the more you consume, the more stays in your body." With a new book on the way claiming that Vitamin C deficiency is also a primary cause of cardiovascular disease,... Considering its overall safety, there appears to be no good reason why anyone with a chronic or acute health problem should not try, at the very least, a couple of week's regime of two or three 1,000mg tablets of Vitamin C a day.

Colloidal Silver - Boosts the immune system and is effective against bacterial and even viral infections - www.silver-colloids.com/Reports/reports.html - It can be bought at health food, vitamin stores (somewhat expensive) or made very cheaply.
Here is a very simply explanation of how to make it yourself:
Go to a Jewelry supply store and buy about 6 inches or so of pure .999 silver jewelers bezel strip (it is true .999 and contains no other toxic metals - while in an emergency two silver coins could be used, you will be getting a mixture of some other metals some of which might be somewhat toxic, a silver .999 oz. round would be better than a silver coin - but it too can have contamination of other metals - pure .999 jewelers bezel strip is the best.) - Fill a one quart (glass-only) jar with distilled water. Add and dissolve in the water ONE SMALL grain of NON-iodine table salt (avoid sea-salt which can have too many other minerals - canning salt is good and tends to be more pure.) Hook three common 9 volt batteries in series (positive to negative to positive to negative, etc....) and having cut the silver strip in two - hold one silver strip to each of the two wire ends being careful that the strips & wires don't touch each other, and place the silver ends in the glass-jar for aprox. 5 minutes - you will see a white mist rising off the silver. Take a teasthingy every three days or so for normal maintenance of the immune system - when sick take an ounce or more up to perhaps 8 ounces per day for serious illness. May also be used topically to kill infection. There are other medical uses as well that you can research on your own. - Silver is necessarily for the immune system to work properly and has no toxic effect unless taken in very large amounts &/or taken in somewhat excessive amounts over a very long period of time - which can cause the skin to turn permanently blue.
~~~
NOTE: Some studies indicate that Echinacea with Goldenseal taken in the weeks before being exposed to disease can strengthen the immune system. - Some recommend only taking for a period of weeks, perhaps 8 weeks, then not taking for the next 8 weeks, then repeating - if you want you can research that more yourself.
[Oil of]: OREGANO
- www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0NAH/is_7_32/ai_91563260 - IS A WOODY SHRUB NATIVE to the Mediterranean. The oil is steam-distilled from fresh or dried leaves.
How It Works
Carvacrol is the primary component in oregano oil. Research suggests that oxygen molecules in it react with water in your body to create heat that kills germs by dehydrating them.
Evidence
Preliminary research for oregano oil supports its use for infections. Several test-tube studies have shown that oregano oil can inhibit or destroy many strains of bacteria, fungi, and parasites. A handful of human and animal studies, sponsored by an oregano oil manufacturer, have found similar results. Anecdotal evidence supports its use for athlete's foot.
In an abstract in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition that appeared last year, 18 mice were injected with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Three of the six mice that received oregano oil orally survived the infection, while two of the six mice that received the antibiotic vancomycin did. All six of the mice that received no treatment died within three days.
The same researchers also tested oregano oil's effects on mice who had been injected with the yeast Candida albicans. In the study, published last year in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, all six of the mice fed oregano oil survived more than 30 days with no sign of Candida infection, while all six mice that were fed just olive oil died within seven days.
A small study published in Phytotherapy Research in 2000 examined the effects of oregano oil on n adults with the intestinal parasite Blastocystis hominis, which can cause diarrhea, anal itching, and weight loss. Participants took 600 mg of oregano oil daily for six weeks. Eight were completely free of the parasite, and the remaining three participants had a reduction in symptoms.
How to Take It
For an infection in your gastrointestinal tract (whether bacterial, fungal, or parasitic), take 0.3 ml of enteric-coated oregano oil capsules three times a day before meals, says Jennifer Brett, N.D., a naturopathic physician and chair of the botanical medicine department at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine in Connecticut. The enteric coating ensures that the capsule won't release the oil before it reaches your intestines.
To treat bacterial and fungal infections that occur in other parts of your body, place I drop of the pure oil under your tongue twice a day, suggests Brett.
For fungal infections on your skin and nails, dilute I teasthingy oregano oil in 2 teasthingys olive oil and apply with a cotton swab to the affected area up to three times a day, she says.
Oregano oil is potent, so you should not exceed these doses. Also, discontinue use within three weeks, Brett advises.
Caveats
Oregano oil is safe for low-dose, short-term use. High doses cause headaches and nausea and may be toxic to the liver. Avoid it if you're pregnant.
Health Claims
Oregano oil (Origanum vulgare) contains natural compounds that combat bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. It can be used for ailments ranging from athlete's foot to food poisoning.
The Bottom Line
Though more human studies need to be done, oregano oil has shown promise as a treatment for bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. It's a powerful remedy that should be used carefully.
EFFECTIVE ANTI-FLU SUBSTANCES
(PREP AGAINST BIRD-FLU - BUT DON'T TAKE THE SHOT!)
PLEASE FORWARD...
NOTE: I've put info from several sources on this subject in the one Email - hopefully this will make it convienent and timely since Bird-Flu has been suggested by the C.D.C. and W.H.O. as perhaps going into a human transmission stage shortly. Even if you're one of those who think the whole thing is just a conspiracy to control people, or one that thinks it was a release of bio-warfare-agent either intentional or accidental from China or somewhere else, or whatever you happen to think - to me it still makes good sense to prepare now. And if nothing happens - then at least you'll have some effective natural remedies on hand when you or your loved ones come down with a "normal" flu.
NOTE: THIS FIRST PRODUCT (SAMBUCOL - Another similar product is Sambucos ) APPEARS TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE, ALTHOUGH I'D RECOMMEND HAVING THEM ALL ON HAND in the case of a severe viral or flu (and also a bacterial) outbreak of any kind for yourself and your family - if you simply can't afford to have them all on hand - I'd seriously suggest at the very least having as a minimum: at least one bottle of "Sambucol" (below) and also a large bottle of vitamin C on hand; and then a bottle too if you can afford it of Elderberry capsules. Hopefully those two or three products alone would be effective enough to fight off any severe viral infection.
ISRAEL 21C - Study shows Israeli elderberry extract (Sambucol) effective against avian flu
By Nicky Blackburn January 29, 2006 -
The elder has often been called the 'medicine chest" of the country people.
At first glance, world-renowned Israeli virologist Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu does not seem like the sort of person you expect to come up with what could turn out to be a cure for one of humanity's biggest threats today - the avian flu.
She seems comfortable and grandmotherly, not the type you usually associate with the frontline of research into a potential pandemic. On the other hand, however, Mumcuoglu is clearly a very determined woman who has turned a lifetime of research into the health benefits of elderberry, an old folk remedy for influenza, into a clinically proven treatment for regular flu. Now, new in-vitro tests have proved that her remedy, the elderberry-based Sambucol, also appears to be effective against avian flu.
Last week, Retroscreen Virology, a leading British medical research institute associated to Queen Mary College, University of London, announced that Sambucol was at least 99% effective against the avian flu virus, H5N1, and in cell cultures significantly neutralized the infectivity of the virus.
"I think that Sambucol has a great role to play - it really can save lives," Mumcuoglu told ISRAEL21c. "To my knowledge, it's the only product that can cut the flu in half, before complications have a chance of setting in. If we do have a cure for chicken flu, this is a really positive thing for Israel."
Mumcuoglu (pronounced mum-shu-glu) was born in Algeria and immigrated to Israel in 1974. She holds a Doctorate in Virology, and studied bird flu during her Ph.D. In the 1980s, Mumcuoglu began studying the natural healing elements of the elderberry from the black elder tree (Sambucus nigra). Her interest in the plant was piqued because it had been used in medicine for many centuries. It was first referred to as a healer in the 5th century BC and received mentions in the writings of Hippocrates, Dioscurides and Plinius.
Elderberry wine was traditionally used for influenza and the ill effects of the chills, and the juice of the black elderberry has historically been an invaluable remedy. The elder has often been called the 'medicine chest" of the country people.
During Mumcuoglu's research she discovered the key active ingredient in elderberry and when she tested it against the flu virus, she found it effective. On her arrival in Israel, Mumcuoglu joined the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, and continued her research.
The result was Sambucol, a patented natural formula which contains a potent antiviral compound, AntiVirin, isolated from the black elderberry, and three flavonoids - naturally occurring plant antioxidants. In 1992, Mumcuoglu decided to commercialize her elderberry supplement, and founded Razei Bar Industries to do so.
Mumcuoglu, who is president of Razei Bar, first tested her research on patients in the Southern Israel flu epidemic of 1992/3. The results were extremely encouraging. Within 24 hours, 20% of those patients taking Sambucol had dramatic improvements in symptoms like fever, muscle aches and pains and coughing. By the second day, 73% were improved and by day three, 90%. In the untreated group, only 16% felt better after two days. The majority of that group took almost a week to begin feeling better.
In 1995, laboratory studies were carried out at Hadassah, which showed that Sambucol was effective against human, swine and avian influenza strains.
Shortly afterwards, a further randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in Norway, where Sambucol was shown to significantly reduce the duration of flu by approximately four days. The use of rescue medication (pain relievers, etc.) was significantly less in the group receiving Sambucol than in the placebo group. The study concluded that Sambucol stimulates the healthy immune system by increasing production of inflammatory cytokines.
Today Razei Bar sells a number of different liquid anti-viral treatments including Sambucol Black Elderberry Extract, Sambucol Black Elderberry Syrup, Sambucol Immune System, and Sambucol for Kids. The company also has a number of elderberry flu remedies designed for diabetics.
At the end of last year, Retroscreen Virology in London began laboratory tests on Sambucol to discover whether the natural remedy could also be used to combat the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu in dog kidney cells. And their findings last week are an encouraging sign.
While it is too soon to know if Sambucol can cure avian flu in humans, the Retroscreen Virology trial does hold out hope that it may be a possible solution if more studies support the findings. Mumcuoglu admits that clinical research into H5N1 is impossible at this stage, because there have only been 140 or so cases around the world, and the mortality rate is over 50%. Instead, the company is preparing to begin in vivo studies to look at the effect of Sambucol against the disease caused by the avian influenza virus.
If Sambucol does prove effective against H5N1, it will be a major breakthrough. Unlike many of the other remedies being touted as possible treatments to bird flu, this is a tried and tested product, already on sale in 17 countries around the world, including the US, Canada, Britain, Holland, Belgium, Norway, Israel, South Korea, and Singapore.
In the US, Sambucol has been well received and now controls about 80% of the elderberry remedy market. The liquid food supplement is distributed by Nature's Way Products and sold in most health food stores across the country.
A SPINS survey revealed that in the US three of Sambucol's products are among the top 10 out of 662 herbal formulas available for adults, while the children's remedy, Sambucol for Kids, is at the top of the list as the number one formula for kids out of 192 products in different categories.
Another advantage of Sambucol, says Mumcuoglu is that unlike the anti-viral drug Tamiflu, which is the only treatment for bird flu now available that is thought to reduce the length and severity of flu symptoms, Sambucol has no side effects. It can also be given safely to children. Tamiflu, in contrast, cannot be given to children under 12.
Recently there has also been doubt cast on the effectiveness of Tamiflu as two Vietnamese patients, including a 13-year-old girl, developed resistance to the anti-viral drug and died. A report on this was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Commenting on the report in the journal, Prof. Anne Moscona of Cornell University in New York said Tamiflu-resistant H5N1 "is now a reality".
"This frightening report should inspire us to device pandemic strategies that do not favor the development of Tamiflu-resistant strains."
The US, like many nations around the world, has stockpiled supplies of Tamiflu.
Another advantage of Sambucol is that it can treat every type of flu virus.
"Our research has shown that the antiviral effect of Sambucol is not strain-specific," says Mumcuoglu. "It was effective against all influenza viruses tested. The original formulation of Sambucol is the product we have tested in all cases - both in the laboratory and in clinical studies for the common flu. It is what was also used in the recent experiments in London against avian influenza virus thus any Sambucol already on the shelves is the same as any we would produce now."
Traditional vaccines given to prevent flu from developing are often created through guesswork, with scientists simply speculating which strain of flu is likely to hit that year. The three most likely strains are combined into a vaccine, but by the time the flu season arrives, these strains may have undergone changes, or new strains may have emerged. Despite this, Mamcuoglu insists that those at risk continue to take their flu jabs.
Mamcuoglu insists that use of Sambucol against traditional flu viruses will help reduce the annual death rate. "If you stop the flu virus at the beginning then you stop it going to the lungs, or from creating the additional complications that are normally the cause of death," she explains.
Currently about 30,000 people die of regular flu every year in the US, a figure that could rise alarmingly if avian flu becomes the pandemic experts are predicting. If Sambucol proves effective against bird flu, however, Mamcuoglu believes that figure will be much lower.
The next round of trials into Sambucol's efficacy as a treatment for bird flu are likely to be completed during the year. Mumcuoglu is ready for any upsurge in sales that are likely if the results are positive. "We have additional production facilities on standby," she says.
The company also has another interesting product in the pipeline, called ArteryCare 40 Plus. This is an antioxidant formula containing strong antioxidants from the elderberry, the pomegranate and the persimmon. It helps avoid the formation of plaque in the arteries by preventing the oxidation of LDL (the bad cholesterol), and is thought to also have anti-aging properties.
Bird Flu, Indian Reverse Engineers and Mangosteens, Oh My! -
I sometimes hang out at Brad DeLong’s blog, where apparently Razib thought I was a dude. Yesterday DeLong wrote a post about Tamiflu, the Roche patented drug which is the one of the only plausible defenses against the dreaded Avian influenza or Asian Bird Flu. DeLong was mostly concerned with the domestic policy and economic ramifications of nationalizing a patent in times of emergency and stockpiling a drug ahead of time, but as with Sepia Mutiny, the comments can be most educational—and that’s how I found out that clever Cipla is at its Robin Hood reverse engineering tricks again. Bird flu is, of course, a global issue:
Cipla, an Indian producer of generic drugs, is preparing to become an alternative producer of oseltamivir phosphate, an antiviral drug better known by the brand name Tamiflu.Cipla plans to offer Tamiflu in the Indian market and in 49 less-developed countries where the company already sells AIDS treatments, Hamied says. The legality of the introduction in India, where pharmaceutical patents started to be recognized this year, is uncertain.
Hamied says he will withdraw Tamiflu from the Indian market if Roche’s patent is recognized. (Link.)
A Roche spokesman, Terry Hurley, said that the company ”fully intends to remain the sole manufacturer of Tamiflu.” . .Making the drug involves 10 complex steps, he said, and the company believes that it’ll take another company ”two to three years, starting from scratch,” to produce it. Hamied dismissed that claim, saying that he initially thought it would be too hard but that his scientists had finished reverse-engineering the drug in his laboratories two weeks ago. He said he could have small commercial quantities available as early as January 2006. Asked if he thought Hamied was making an idle boast, Hurley declined to comment. Hamied said he would sell generic Tamiflu ”at a humanitarian price” in developing nations and not aim at the US or European market. ”God forbid the avian flu should strike India,” he said. ”There is no line of defense.” (Link.)
What does this have to do with mangosteens? I’m glad you asked!
DeLong commenter DuckedApe pointed out an Independent article (original link, readable copy) about how Tamiflu has a key raw ingredient that is primarily available in large quantities from a species of Chinese star anise:
But the herb has a vital function as the source of shikimic acid from which the drug Tamiflu is made, the only defence the world currently has against the threatened flu pandemic… .Yesterday it emerged that a shortage of star anise is one of the key reasons why countries including Britain cannot obtain enough Tamiflu to protect their populations. The herb from which Tamiflu is made is grown in four provinces in China and “huge quantities” of its seeds are needed, according to the Swiss pharmaceutical manufacturer Roche. It is harvested by local farmers between March and May, purified and the shikimic acid extracted at the start of a 10-stage manufacturing process which takes a year. Only star anise grown in the four provinces of China is suitable for manufacture into Tamiflu and 90 per cent of the harvest is already used by Roche. (Link.)
Hamied is aware of the problem: .
But Cipla has neither produced the drug in large quantities nor is able to predict whether its price will be much lower than Roche’s “You must understand one thing: Our synthesis starts from shikimic acid, and it’s not native to India, so we must get it from outside,” Cipla Chairman and Managing Director Yusuf K. Hamied says. (Link.)
Once you have the shikimic acid, the process to make Tamiflu is extremely complex and even involves an explosive step similar to one in AZT manufacturing. It seems that what Cipla has reverse engineered is this post shikimic acid process. Roche has developed a “fermentation route” to manufacturing the shikimic acid, and it seems that Cipla has not yet reverse engineered that. It makes sense that harvesting the raw material might be cheaper than synthesizing or even growing it in vats of E. Coli.* So I got to wondering—what other plants even contain shikimic acid? (I’m, uh, taking Roche’s word for it that “only” the star anise which Roche happens to have a lock on could possibly be useful.)
Eye-straining KosmicJourney.com listed it in the leaves of our familiar rice plant, but I’m a sucker for .gov databases and when I found Dr. Duke’s Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Database at ARS-GRIN.gov** I was thrilled to see what plants came up for Shikimik Acid. It seems that small amounts are available from prickly pears, the leaves of the mastic tree, and India’s own haritaki fruit. The motherlode of a possible 700,000 ppm, however, comes from the leaves of one Mammea americana:
Botanically, it is identified as Mammea americana L., of the family Guttiferae, and therefore related to the mangosteen, q.v. Among alternative names in English are mammee, mammee apple, St. Domingo apricot and South American apricot… .The ripe flesh is appetizingly fragrant and, in the best varieties, pleasantly subacid, resembling the apricot or red raspberry in flavor.. . The mamey is native to the West Indies and northern South America. . It has been nurtured as a specimen in English greenhouses since 1735. It grows well in Bermuda and is quite commonly cultivated in the Bahama Islands and the Greater and Lesser Antilles. (Link.)
In other words, it’s the mangosteen’s long lost Latin American cousin! Mangosteen was previously noted by Abhi as the South Asian Queen of Fruits, and fellow guest-blogger ADS had previously directed my attention to the Fighting Mangosteens! At some point we wondered idly if the tough looking fruit was drinking a glass of its own brethren. I hope it’s not a glass of its Carribean cousins. I am rather charmed by a vision of this tough desi fruit affectionately greeting its relation at the airport, albeit with an Italian accent: Mammea Americana!
Anti-viral advice - boosting the immune system:
Considering its overall safety, there appears to be no good reason why anyone with a chronic or acute health problem should not try, at the very least, a couple of week's regime of two or three 1,000mg tablets of Vitamin C a day.
Need to Know: So how much should you take?
* For a cold
Three 1,000mg doses a day, according to the campaign group Consumers for Health Choice.
* For flu
Although it's more serious, the viral load is similar, according to research, and taking up to 20,000mg a day could be beneficial.
* For shingles
Research has shown that this painful post-viral condition can be pretty well cured by an injection of 3,000mg of vitamin C. Taking four 1,000mg tablets orally for three days could be worthwhile as well.
* For a hangover
Taking 1,000mg daily in the week before a booze-up reduces stress on the liver. If you're drunk and want to look sober, a large dose of vitamin C will prevent drunken behaviour, according to a 1986 study, "Alcohol and Alcoholism".
* To maintain your health
A 1,000mg daily dose is regarded as safe by the Food Standards Agency, and adequate to keep sufficient vitamin C in the plasma and tissues. "We believe this is absolutely safe and definitely beneficial to people's health," says Sue Croft of Consumers for Health Choice.
Vitamin C May Be A Life-Saver
Mega-doses Can Counter Avian Flu, Hepatitis &
Herpes, And Control Advance Of AIDS
By Jane Feinmann The Independent - UK 4-14-5
...research showing that high doses of Vitamin C can combat bacteria, toxins and severe viral infections including avian flu, SARS, hepatitis and herpes. And this is not a case of doctors sniffing at anecdotal evidence from a handful of enthusiasts. "Vitamin C is possibly the best-researched substance in the world. There are more than 24,000 papers and articles on the authoritative clinical website, Medline.... Levy claims that while recommended daily allowances of 60mg are enough to prevent the development of scurvy in otherwise healthy people, much higher levels are required to maintain health when an infection strikes. At such times, the body begins to "metabolise unusually large amounts of vitamin C, keeping stores so depleted that the recommended daily allowance will not even prevent many of the symptoms of scurvy from developing".
Levy claims that the reason why most animals stay healthy throughout their lives, while humans spend years coping with one or more chronic diseases, is that animals make their own Vitamin C. The wild goat, for instance, makes around 13,000mg a day, rising to 100,000mg when faced with life-threatening infectious or toxic stress, according to a 1961 study published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.
So, is Levy right? Should everyone be taking mega-doses every day and having intravenous infusions when they fall ill? Possibly.
Dr Rodney Adeniyi-Jones regularly gives 20,000mg doses to people with arterial disease and as part of a flu treatment protocol, describing its effects as "beneficial... but not miraculous". And Professor George Lewith of the Centre for Complementary and Integrated Medicine says that while Vitamin C is not a panacea, it does have clinical benefits depending on the dosage....
Levy may well be seen to have an axe to grind, yet the evidence seems to support his view that apart from causing diarrhoea, mega-doses of Vitamin C are not toxic. He says that a series of studies published in leading journals have shown that, far from causing cancer, Vitamin C is a safe supplement for chronic cancer patients. Further large studies suggest that supplements do not put a normal person at greater risk of developing kidney stones. According to Levy, the problem is not that people might take too much, but that they won't take enough - and thus won't get the desired effects. "There's a popular medical view that taking Vitamin C just makes expensive urine. Some of it is lost in urine, but the more you consume, the more stays in your body." With a new book on the way claiming that Vitamin C deficiency is also a primary cause of cardiovascular disease,... Considering its overall safety, there appears to be no good reason why anyone with a chronic or acute health problem should not try, at the very least, a couple of week's regime of two or three 1,000mg tablets of Vitamin C a day.
Colloidal Silver - Boosts the immune system and is effective against bacterial and even viral infections - www.silver-colloids.com/Reports/reports.html - It can be bought at health food, vitamin stores (somewhat expensive) or made very cheaply.
Here is a very simply explanation of how to make it yourself:
Go to a Jewelry supply store and buy about 6 inches or so of pure .999 silver jewelers bezel strip (it is true .999 and contains no other toxic metals - while in an emergency two silver coins could be used, you will be getting a mixture of some other metals some of which might be somewhat toxic, a silver .999 oz. round would be better than a silver coin - but it too can have contamination of other metals - pure .999 jewelers bezel strip is the best.) - Fill a one quart (glass-only) jar with distilled water. Add and dissolve in the water ONE SMALL grain of NON-iodine table salt (avoid sea-salt which can have too many other minerals - canning salt is good and tends to be more pure.) Hook three common 9 volt batteries in series (positive to negative to positive to negative, etc....) and having cut the silver strip in two - hold one silver strip to each of the two wire ends being careful that the strips & wires don't touch each other, and place the silver ends in the glass-jar for aprox. 5 minutes - you will see a white mist rising off the silver. Take a teasthingy every three days or so for normal maintenance of the immune system - when sick take an ounce or more up to perhaps 8 ounces per day for serious illness. May also be used topically to kill infection. There are other medical uses as well that you can research on your own. - Silver is necessarily for the immune system to work properly and has no toxic effect unless taken in very large amounts &/or taken in somewhat excessive amounts over a very long period of time - which can cause the skin to turn permanently blue.
~~~
NOTE: Some studies indicate that Echinacea with Goldenseal taken in the weeks before being exposed to disease can strengthen the immune system. - Some recommend only taking for a period of weeks, perhaps 8 weeks, then not taking for the next 8 weeks, then repeating - if you want you can research that more yourself.

[Oil of]: OREGANO
- www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0NAH/is_7_32/ai_91563260 - IS A WOODY SHRUB NATIVE to the Mediterranean. The oil is steam-distilled from fresh or dried leaves.
How It Works
Carvacrol is the primary component in oregano oil. Research suggests that oxygen molecules in it react with water in your body to create heat that kills germs by dehydrating them.
Evidence
Preliminary research for oregano oil supports its use for infections. Several test-tube studies have shown that oregano oil can inhibit or destroy many strains of bacteria, fungi, and parasites. A handful of human and animal studies, sponsored by an oregano oil manufacturer, have found similar results. Anecdotal evidence supports its use for athlete's foot.
In an abstract in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition that appeared last year, 18 mice were injected with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Three of the six mice that received oregano oil orally survived the infection, while two of the six mice that received the antibiotic vancomycin did. All six of the mice that received no treatment died within three days.
The same researchers also tested oregano oil's effects on mice who had been injected with the yeast Candida albicans. In the study, published last year in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, all six of the mice fed oregano oil survived more than 30 days with no sign of Candida infection, while all six mice that were fed just olive oil died within seven days.
A small study published in Phytotherapy Research in 2000 examined the effects of oregano oil on n adults with the intestinal parasite Blastocystis hominis, which can cause diarrhea, anal itching, and weight loss. Participants took 600 mg of oregano oil daily for six weeks. Eight were completely free of the parasite, and the remaining three participants had a reduction in symptoms.
How to Take It
For an infection in your gastrointestinal tract (whether bacterial, fungal, or parasitic), take 0.3 ml of enteric-coated oregano oil capsules three times a day before meals, says Jennifer Brett, N.D., a naturopathic physician and chair of the botanical medicine department at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine in Connecticut. The enteric coating ensures that the capsule won't release the oil before it reaches your intestines.
To treat bacterial and fungal infections that occur in other parts of your body, place I drop of the pure oil under your tongue twice a day, suggests Brett.
For fungal infections on your skin and nails, dilute I teasthingy oregano oil in 2 teasthingys olive oil and apply with a cotton swab to the affected area up to three times a day, she says.
Oregano oil is potent, so you should not exceed these doses. Also, discontinue use within three weeks, Brett advises.
Caveats
Oregano oil is safe for low-dose, short-term use. High doses cause headaches and nausea and may be toxic to the liver. Avoid it if you're pregnant.
Health Claims
Oregano oil (Origanum vulgare) contains natural compounds that combat bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. It can be used for ailments ranging from athlete's foot to food poisoning.
The Bottom Line
Though more human studies need to be done, oregano oil has shown promise as a treatment for bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. It's a powerful remedy that should be used carefully.
