As we enter into the final days of the counting of the omer and are about to enter into the palace of Shavuot, we read of an American administration that is intent on creating a terrorist state in the Biblical heartland.
As we prepare for the great day of receiving G-d`s revelation, we read of the Intent of certain ministers in our government including our Prime minister to destroy 24 settlement outposts as a "sign of good faith" towards the Obama administration.
How can intelligent individuals think that appeasing the evil of terrorism will quiet the beast? How can decent hearted people assume that a two state solution can be a recipe for peace when it is painfully clear that one of those states is going to be another state of terror?
It can only be a function of short sightedness. Perhaps it is rooted in a cancer that is more ancient, more evil and ever-present.
Our sages ask why Divine knowledge was given on a small mountain in the middle of the desert. They respond that if it was given in the Land of Israel, the residents of the Land of Israel would say, "It is ours"; and if it were given in some other place, the residents of that place would say, "It is ours." Therefore it was given in the wilderness, so that anyone who wishes to acquire it may acquire it.(Mechilta D`Rashbi).
Yet the next level of understanding revealed by the sages is even more important.
The Torah was given in the desert to teach us that if a person does not surrender himself to humility as represented by the desert, he cannot merit the words of Torah. (Pesikta D`Rav Kahana)
The western Hellenist mindset that has overwhelmed rational thinking in the west is so focused on destination that it has forgotten about the voyage. It is so "solution based" that it has forgotten to be mindful of the process. As a result every "simple solution" keeps blowing up in our face....
