The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and was at the relatively shallow depth of 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado. The quake struck 80 miles northeast of La Ceiba, Honduras, and 200 miles from the capital, Tegucigalpa. A tsunami watch was in effect for Honduras, Belize and Guatemala, according to the Pacific tsunami warning center. In Guatemala City, people ran into the streets in their pajamas after the quake struck at 3:24 a.m. (4:24 a.m. ET). But firefighter Byron Juarez in Guatemala City said a survey of firefighting offices nationwide revealed no reports of damage.
